Whoa, Whoa, Whoa…the past two days were emotional and unforgettable. Day 3 began with Overland/Overwater, a full team effort! It’s a tag race filled with many different areas such as biking, canoeing, soccer dribbling, running, three legged race and more, that ends in the final Chief Run. Then everyone headed to their campsites to get it ready for Meal judging and Campsite building.
After lunch the Meal prep began. Each Tribe gets the same base ingredients, Chicken Breasts and Steak. They must present their additional wishlists of ingredients on the 1st day of Frontier Week. Some plan their menus way before camp begins, some plan at the start of Frontier Week. This event can earn the most points for the Tribe, over any other event. Seniors and Counselors prepped the food, while the Juniors worked on the Campsites. After the meal prep was complete, they brought everything to the campsite to cook on an open fire. The Juniors then competed in Cake Decorating that was included in the Meal score. All Tribes got an amazing dinner of Grilled Steak and Fries plus their yummy cakes. Everything was enjoyed at the Campsites.
The 3rd night’s event is always Tug of War. The ENTIRE tribe takes the rope. It’s a huge accomplishment to win and very intense! You can watch the video highlights on vimeo.com/lakeowegocamp
Day 4 is emotional, hard and the day Owegans wait all year for! It begins with Medicine Man’s Challenge. A scavenger hunt, with a list like you have never seen, including lost items that no-one could find for days, or weeks, and then suddenly are found, like Sammy Caplan’s bicycle helmet or Rabbi Goldfarb’s car key. Lunch is a Silent Meal and the officials do crazy things to get the tribes to talk and lose points. Right after lunch everyone heads to the stage for Cheer judging and then back to the Campsites for final preparation. Campsites all must have a table that can seat the entire team, a waterproof shelter that can also fit the entire team and a Junior project. You would never believe what the boys build! Pictures don’t even begin to depict how much work, sweat and heart they put into their Campsites.
After a long shower (except the Chiefs), then dinner, the Tribes rehearse their Songs. Emotions are high and the songs tell their story. This is what we wait all year for, this final night, the closing ceremonial campfire…what Tribe will win? As the Tribes head up to Jacoby field, led by the Chiefs holding the Torches the juniors made them on Day 2, tears flow as they approach the HUGE blazing campfire arm in arm.
The entire camp circles around the fire and Kyle leads the Chiefs to turn their backs to the fire and face their Tribe. Kyle then taps the 6th place Chief on the shoulder and they throw their torch and bandanna into the flames. Then the 5th, 4th, 3rd until its down to two Chiefs. He guides them to stand side by side and tells them things only they will ever know. He taps the 2nd place Chief and the winning tribes erupts! TAINO IS THE WINNER! Chief Michael Abrahams and Head Coach Andrew Quigley led their Tribe on an incredible journey and they will forever be remembered on the Frontier Week plaque.
Tomorrow it’s LATE sleep and Omelet bar in the Grove, followed by Costas!
