Day Two dawned with clear skies and, dare we say it, a slight chill in the air. Campers emerged from their bunks, no doubt refreshed by a good night’s sleep. With all of yesterday’s activity, the Juniors were probably asleep before their heads hit the pillow! Everyone gathered at the flag pole for our First Morning Lineup of 2025.
Morning lineup started with the raising of the American flag, followed by Kyle’s much-anticipated announcement of the day’s culinary menu. Today? Bagels, eggs, and potatoes for breakfast, chicken patties for lunch, and pasta with meatballs for dinner. Additional announcements regarding the day’s schedule were made before turning it over to Freedo. Freedo launched into his multi-lingual chorus of “Good mornings” and wrapped up with his question of the day. Then Scotty stepped forward to present his interesting facts of the day (which can involve anything from TV shows to natural disasters). The stunning conclusion of morning lineup was the Owego sports report.
After breakfast and inspection, the Junior division launched directly into its regular schedule while the Seniors and Hi-Seniors participated in the first Choice selection of the summer. Counselors from the different areas of camp “pitched” their activities with the goal of enticing campers to join them for a designated period. The campers scrambled to sign up for their activities of choice, and Voila! Each camper’s daily schedule for the week was created.
Today was a letter-writing day, which means that tomorrow is a Canteen day. Let the rush to the mailbox begin, parents! Things move a little slower up here in Greeley, so don’t get your hopes up until at least Wednesday or Thursday!
Today’s main event was evening activity. It is an Owego tradition that the second night of camp brings Fox & Hound to the Juniors and Bombardment to the Seniors and Hi-Seniors. A long-standing favorite among Owegans, Fox & Hound involves campers running around in search of hiding counselors. Each counselor has a card with a certain number of points. When the camper escorts the counselor back to base, his team earns the points.
Bombardment is what can only be described as Dodgeball with a thousand nuanced rules. And the campers love every minute of it! Bunks typically dress as a theme, like Marvel characters or Hawaiian shirts, and boy, do these guys get fired up. On the tennis courts, Senior bunks play against other Seniors in a bracket-style tournament, and the Hi-Seniors do the same. The big finale takes place in the Silverdome, with the winning Senior bunk playing the winning Hi-Senior bunk. Tonight, bunk Apache faced off against Tent 1. In the end, Tent 1 was victorious. Don’t worry, the Seniors will get another chance at an upset during Second Session!
As the sun sets on another amazing day at our summer home, we can’t wait to see what tomorrow will bring.
