Mondays that begin at camp, with a breakfast of French toast sticks, are the best kind of Mondays! Then there’s the added bonus of it being a Canteen day, and you really can’t go wrong.
And so we began the last day of June.
It was another warm, partly sunny day at camp, and our campers were out on the fields and courts, in the lake and the pool, and pretty much everywhere in between. Whether they were playing football or soccer on the Upper Field, basketball in the HBC, or card and board games in the picnic grove, everyone found something he loved. Some chose to play Ultimate Frisbee, while others tried fencing for the first time. There were brave souls who conquered the zip line on the Ropes course, and aspiring sluggers who tried their hands at Quickball. One of the things that makes Owego so special is the encouragement campers receive when trying something new.

After a delicious lunch of tacos (cue the massive bowl of guacamole!), campers headed back to bunks for rest hour. Bunks were called one at a time, down to Canteen. The Golden Ticket for receiving Canteen? One letter home! Eager snack-seeking campers lined up and handed over a sealed envelope in order to be granted entry into a place where chips and candy are lined up so enticingly that you almost expect Oompa-Loompas to strut out and start singing. The letters that were turned in today will be sent out with tomorrow’s mail. It is possible that you will receive a letter saying, “Hi Mom and Dad, I had to write this letter to get Canteen. Love, Your Son.” It is also possible that you may receive a blank piece of stationary. Silver lining? No news is good news!

Tonight’s dinner will be Greek night (the falafel and tzatziki are fab!) and the divisions will split up for Evening Activity. Seniors will play Capture the Flag on the Upper Field, while Hi-Seniors will participate in wiffleball leagues. Juniors will play “Running Radios,” an Owego favorite that has bunks rotating to different stations around camp where they play fun and silly games. Do you see a theme here with our Evening Activities? We like to keep these boys busy and get them nice and tired! Because a fantastic Monday like today calls for a fantastic night’s sleep.
This blog wouldn’t dream of leaving out the parents’ favorite camp activity — PHONE CALLS with their campers! Earlier today, families should have received an email with a Sign-Up Genius link to schedule a first session phone call. PLEASE read the instructions carefully, and start making a list of questions for your camper! Squeezing 3 weeks of camp fun into a 10-minute phone conversation isn’t for the faint of heart!
In the meantime, sit back, relax, and enjoy the photos/blog/social media posts!
